Bumpin': The Modern Guide To Pregnancy
By Leslie Schrock I found a lot of the pregnancy guidance books to be out of date. Bumpin' has been my go to book throughout my pregnancy and I love its modern approach. The book also has real accounts of peoples' experiences peppered throughout it which I have found helpful.
I absolutely adore this book. I found a lot of the advice and guidance given by my OB's (at my practice you see a rotation of doctors) confusing and sometimes conflicting. This book did an excellent job of explaining the "why" with thoughtful, evidence-based explanations. I really liked being able to understand both sides of the argument and decide what was the best course for me.
SKIPPING
the Pregnancy Community Forums
Okay not so much as a resource but, rather a strong suggestion... I found the community forums to be very unhelpful and even triggering, especially in the first trimester. Wade into these forums with extreme caution and remember that the best advice is from a medical provider. The amplification of negative messaging and tendency towards assuming the worst makes them very unhealthy. For the routine questions I highly recommend checking your pregnancy book or checking in with a friend who has already been pregnant, and taking it from there.

]]>I love going to the King Street location to get a manicure or pedicure. In fact, I am taking advantage of their BYOC promo for my birthday this weekend. Check out the amazing nail art I got last time at HMP.
We are obsessed with their RRR: it is life-changing! This is not your average facial the radical radiance regime is Toronto’s newest buccal massage located in the beautiful Yorkville neighbourhood. The RRR combines traditional ancient science sculpting with the latest microcurrent technology to leave your skin hydrated, lifted and youthful.
An absolute staple here in Toronto! The thought of sitting on its back patio drinking a Negroni got me through a lot of the dark days of the pandemic. My go-to order? Tonnarelli alla Norcina.
Their sourdough is a favourite for Evan. I also love grabbing the Nutella mini donuts for my nephew, Sam. Pro tip: grab Terroni Peppers to dip your sourdough bread.
Egyptian brunch and probably my go-to brunch place in the city. If you haven’t gone, don’t walk… run. My go-to order? The Chef’s Appetizer Platter is a great introduction to the restaurant. Evan’s go-to order? The Cairo Classic. Make sure you also get the Cardamon Latte!
Legendary ice cream sandwiches. It reminds me of a spot in Halifax near Dalhousie that we used to visit during university. You pick your cookie and ice cream for a tailored-to-you ice cream sandwich experience. My go-to order? The dark chocolate cookie with vegan mint chocolate chip ice cream.
This place is great for Uber Eats. My order is usually the chicken souvlaki. Ordering with a bunch of friends? Make sure you get the dips. Our favourite? The Spicy Feta Dip.
Insane cocktails! Evan last time had absinthe, and it was definitely an experience. It comes out in a fountain… yup, you read that correctly.
Best Chocolate Chip Cookies! They are truly epic. Chocolate chip with and without walnuts. I was heartbroken when Portland Variety closed a few years ago, but I am so happy the cookie lives on.
From the bread to the oysters and everything in between. Make sure you have a reservation!
]]>We had just the best time in St. John’s, Newfoundland. The city is such a gorgeous place filled with character and hidden gems. Here are my favourite spots to go to in St. John’s:
Founded in 1920, the Newfoundland Outport Nursing and Industrial Association is in the heart of downtown St. John’s on Water Street. Their shop is filled with hand-knit sweaters made by over 130 craftswomen from all around Newfoundland and its outports. I wore NONIA sweaters from as early as I could remember but haven’t had one since high school – obviously a problem we had to fix! Evan and I both picked up a new sweater this trip. His is a classic oatmeal sailor sweater, while mine is a red/pink pullover. It is perfect for walking the pups early in the morning.
Our favourite spot to stay in St. John’s, this 8-room hotel is tucked away in Quidi Vidi, and is about a 40-minute walk or 7-minute drive from downtown. The Inn is delightful! The rooms are big and bright and have so many thoughtful touches. A charcuterie board waits for you when you arrive, and coffee or tea and a selection of morning pastries are delivered to your room to start off each day. Evan’s favourite part of the Inn was the complimentary beer, wine and cocktail bar.
Barely 2 minutes’ walk from Mallards Cottage Inn and overhanging Quidi Vidi harbour, you can sample Newfoundland’s best at a serious craft brewery.
Across the street from the Inn, serving brunch and dinner. We had brunch here, and it was absolutely amazing. I highly recommend that one person does the daily menu as it comes with a sample box of a half-dozen take-home sweets!
A St. John’s landmark fish and chip shop – if you can find it in the narrow stairway down to Water St. Get your chips “Newfie-style” with dressing (turkey stuffing) and gravy on top.
A great viewing point of the city, harbour, and “Narrows”, the entrance to the harbour only 200 metres wide. Great views of the harbour of St. John’s. If the weather is nice, take advantage of the great walking paths.
Probably my Dad’s favourite spot to visit. All about the geology and unique landscape that distinguishNewfoundland from almost everywhere else on earth. Great for ages seven and up!
The most eastern point of North America. Just try to go on a calm wind day. We had to stay low to the ground to avoid being taken by the wind.
Located on Water Street and sister restaurant to the Famous Raymonds restaurant. We had amazing oysters here - highly recommend!

For the Parisian brand, Louise Misha, fall is all about boho-chic. The Fall/Winter 2018 Collection is inspired by the changing seasons in Eastern Europe and brings together layers of embroidery, delicate patterns, and silky soft fabrics.
While on vacation in India, two Parisian friends were inspired to start their own prêt-à-porter and accessories line for babies, little girls, and women. Louise Misha was born. Marie Pidancet and Aurélie Remetter named their company Louise Misha in honour of two strong women in their families, a grandmother named 'Louise' and a mother with the last name 'Misha'.
The Louise Misha universe is all about bohemian style, nostalgia and softness. This season's collection is no exception. The colours are straight from a Pre-Raphaelite painting. The earthy textures of linen, cotton, and shearling, as well as the lacey ruffles and floral embroidery perfectly capture the nomadic spirit of the brand.
Here are 5 essential pieces to capture the Beautiful Boho style:
The Iwona is a dreamy bohemian dress with long sleeves in a soft steel blue cotton/linen fabric. Embellished with embroidery on the chest and ruffles from the shoulders to the waist.
The Timour Vest is a cosy sleeveless layer in ivory faux fur with delicate golden floral embroidery on the front. It's a simple and beautiful addition for carefree fall and winter outfits. The matching "Varvara Vest" is available in women's sizes.
Imagine her sparkling eyes looking up at you as you cuddle your little one by the fireplace in this lovely floral romper with long sleeves. Sweet ruffle details adorn the shoulders and delicate contrasting floral embroidery decorates the front of the Yana Romper.
The Polonia Winter Hat is a cosy blossom-coloured bonnet in faux fur with delicate matching floral embroidery.
The Tamara Top is a flowy blouse in lovely blue-green and rosy pink cotton. Adorned with lacey ruffles on the shoulders and front. Billowy long sleeves gently narrowing at the wrists. Button closure on the back.

Who knew luxury fashion could promote women's rights? 2018 is the year of the feminist fashion brand. From Stella McCartney and Cynthia Rowley to Diane von Furstenberg, haute couture designers are stepping up to create change for women around the world.
If you watched the Golden Globes, you know it was the night for making political fashion statements. You couldn't have missed all the Hollywood actresses wearing black to support the Time's Up Legal Defense Fund. Actress Connie Britton's outfit also made a statement: her black cashmere sweater displayed a "Poverty is Sexist" slogan written in cursive across the front. The shirt made headlines around the world.
Connie Britton at the Golden Globes (Photo Courtesy: Lingua Franca/Instagram)
Britton's sweater was designed by feminist fashion brand Lingua Franca. Each sweater is sustainably-sourced and made of fair-trade luxury cashmere. A one-hundred dollar donation from each sale is donated to charities like the Women's International Fund for Female Education. So far Lingua Franca has donated more than 160 thousand dollars to charity.
Rachelle Hruska MacPherson, the founder of Lingua Franca and the wife of a famous New York City hotelier, employs a team of fifty people to hand-embroider words taken from trending topics in the news. Popular designs include: "Oprah for Pres," "Science Not Fiction," and "Wonder Woman."
"It all started with a stitch – literally," explains Lingua Franca owner, Rachelle. "One weekend I was just looking to burn off some anxiety and turned to embroidery (a craft my grandma Rita taught me when I was a young girl in Nebraska). I picked up an old cashmere sweater, a needle and thread and started riffing on hip-hop lyrics (the lingua franca of our times, don’t you think?) and LF was born – a subversive underground movement to counteract the forces of mass production, mindless consumerism, and the patriarchy. Just kidding (kind of)."
Reese Witherspoon (Photo Courtesy: Lingua Franca/Instagram)
Lingua Franca sweaters have been spotted on Reese Witherspoon, Meryl Streep, Mandy Moore, and Kristen Bell. Witherspoon commissioned a batch of custom sweaters for organizers of the Time's Up Legal Defense Fund, a movement of 300 Hollywood actresses and 200 volunteer lawyers who are fighting to end sexual harassment.
Poppys Collection is proud to support this trendsetting new brand and its charities by bringing Lingua Franca to Canada.
Our new partnership of exclusive designs for women and kids includes the slogans: "The Future is Female" and "I've Got This."
Each Lingua Franca x Poppys Collection sweater is made of 100% fair trade cashmere and hand-stitched in New York City.

]]>Choosing a newborn photographer and a style of photography can be a very hard decision, especially when you're sleep deprived and recovering from your delivery. Toronto photographer and guest blogger, Nicole Lewis, is here to help you choose.
]]>by Nicole Lewis, Baby & Family Photographer
Choosing a newborn photographer and a style of photography can be a very hard decision, especially when you're sleep deprived and recovering from your delivery. Don't worry, I'm here to help you make the right decision for your family.
The first thing you need to know, there are a couple of different styles of newborn photography: The Lifestyle Session and The Studio Session.
This style of photography involves both the baby by themselves, as well as the baby with their parents. Lifestyle sessions don’t involve any type of props or formal posing. Instead, they are more candid in nature, with the primary focus placed on the new bond between parents and child.
The last thing a new mom wants is to pack up and travel with their new baby and siblings etc. My sessions are done in the comfort of your own home! You may not be in your forever home yet but its important to you that you see where they came home from the hospital.
There is no better backdrop than your newborn's first home! You put a lot of thought and care into decorating your baby's nursery and you'd probably love to remember it exactly as it is right now. You can also share images of your baby's first bedroom with your child years from now.
The reality of welcoming a new baby into your home is not always as pretty as a studio backdrop. Let's face it, you might not have time to clean the laundry, do the dishes or wash your hair. While a talented photographer can definitely work miracles in this department, it's something to consider when inviting them into your home for a lifestyle shoot.
If you are looking for natural interaction between you and your baby, a lifestyle photography session may be right for you. It's definitely easier to achieve a relaxed, natural feeling in the images when you're comfortable and many people feel more comfortable at home than in a studio setting.
These important members of the family aren't always welcome in a studio environment. If you definitely want to include all members of your family in the photoshoot, a lifestyle session at home may be the answer.
This style of photography also involves both the baby by themselves and the baby with their parents. They will take place in the photographer's studio or in a rented studio space. They often involve props and formal posing. They tend to be more formal in nature with the primary focus placed on the positioning of the baby and the props.
If you're hoping to achieve that polished, poised image with everyone staring into the camera lens standing against a perfectly lighted snowy backdrop, a portrait session might be the best option for you. Portrait images tend to look stiffer and more formal. (Think of the family portraits from your childhood that lined the fireplace mantel.) But if you're willing to make the trip to a studio, a portrait will make a beautiful family keepsake for years to come.
Babies are hard to photograph, even for the best photographers. They don't always cooperate with what we want them to do. They are awake when we want them to sleep, and they're asleep when we want them to be awake. To get that perfectly poised image you're looking for, you may need to spend some time waiting for the perfect moment to arrive. You know the one: when the baby is changed and dry, well-fed, and sound asleep all at the same time. Believe me, that perfect Anne Geddes moment is a real practice in patience.
Nicole Lewis is a Toronto-based photographer who offers lifestyle, maternity and family photography sessions, as well as Fresh48, cake smashes and birthday portraits. You can find her work featured in Looks Like Film, Life and Lens Blog and 100 Layer Cake.

We all want the best for our kids and we get excited just at the thought of celebrating them in any way. But it's even more exciting when it comes to celebrating their birthdays. However, let's admit it. Planning a child's birthday can be a little overwhelming. I mean, where do you even start? The pressure is on, especially for a first birthday.
I know how you feel, so I've done the homework for you. Here are 5 of my favorite party planning tips to inspire you and simplify the whole process. Hopefully, that means you can pull off a party everyone will enjoy, stress-free!
This might seem like extra work but no, if you pick a theme, it's easier to match the decor, activities and even your child's outfit. It could be based on a favorite toy, a character from a book or a movie, or even something generic like a princess or color-based theme. Keep it simple or go all out!
Now that you have a theme, start thinking of venues. Do you want to host at the party at home or would you prefer to let someone else take care of everything, including the cleanup? Although it may be cheaper to do everything yourself, there is something to be said for letting someone else do all the hard work so you relax and enjoy the celebrations with your little one. Money well spent if you ask me.
Bearing in mind the venue and theme, it's time to think about the guest list. Are you catering for kids, adults, or both? Are you celebrating your child's milestone or surviving your own first year of parenthood?
By now, you've likely met tons of other parents at prenatal classes, play centers, or parenting support groups with kids who are similar in age. Why not join forces to split the cost, to-do-list, and stress? Plan a double, triple or group party. Likely the kiddos will love the idea, or they are too tiny to know the difference. On a practical note, with lots of birthdays in your social circle falling around the same time, you won't end up being double booked either!
Games are the best icebreakers and lots of fun for kiddos and adults alike. Everyone loves a game, especially when there are prizes involved. Prizes don't have to break the bank either. Just hit up the local dollar store to keep everyone entertained at a minimal cost.

Unfortunately, babies don’t come with a handbook. But if they did, here are a few Mom Hacks resident mommy blogger and social media manager, Francesca Brunsden, wishes she'd known when her son was born.
]]>By Francesca Brunsden, Social Media Manager & Mom
As a new mom, everything feels new and scary. Some things just seem like a mystery, like burping for example. Babies don’t come with a handbook but if they did there would be a few of the tops tips/hacks I wish I had known when my newborn arrived.
Burping a baby was always a mystery to me before having a child of my own. As any nurse will tell you, it really is an art form! Doctors recommend burping your baby in between feedings and right after the baby has finished drinking. For breastfeeding moms, try burping as you change sides. For bottle feeding mamas, try burping every 2 to 3 ounces right up until the baby is 6 months old.
Now for the how-to part. Don’t forget the burping cloth! No one likes to be covered in spit up. Please note: for newborns, always remember to support the baby's head. Burp in the following positions by patting gently on the baby's back for a couple of minutes before pausing. Alternate between patting and a circular, rubbing movement on their back.
If those positions fail and your babe is still fussing, try laying them on their back and moving their legs up and down as if they were cycling. Don't give up! Sometimes it can take a while. If in doubt, REST AND REPEAT!
I learned this one the hard way! Especially in those early days, you probably want your babe to sleep as long as possible. But the longer the nap, the bigger the risk of a total diaper blow-out. Trust me, it is possible for poo to shoot across a room. I've seen it first hand!
To protect against a nighttime nappy nightmare, stack a mattress pad and a fitted sheet on top of your mattress pad and fitted sheet. The second layer of protection will make cleanup much quicker and easier. Just whip off the first later and throw it into the washing basket to deal with in the morning. There you have it: a freshly made crib.
A simple, yet genius solution. Throw your baby's socks into a delicate wash bag before tossing them into the laundry. As parents, we spend way too much time cleaning. So who has time to find and match all your baby's smalls anyway? The mesh garment bag will keep all their teensy items together and stop their socks from disappearing to that mysterious place other socks go to hide.
Speaking of socks, another great tip for parents is to buy the same type, color, and style of sock every time. You’ll never have to match a pair again!
This is key. Never go anywhere without one. You can download some great apps from the Apple or Google Play store, some that even mimic the sounds inside the womb. They're so relaxing that even us mommies and daddies will be sleeping more soundly. Or maybe that's just the exhaustion from being a new parent!
Not quite a hack, but great advice nonetheless. Sometimes a break is as good as rest. If someone is offering to hold your baby, let them. If they offer to bring you a cooked meal, let them. Don’t be polite! Anyone who’s had a kid knows what it's like to struggle as a new parent. Take that shower, have that nap, or get some fresh air. You’ll feel refreshed and you'll be a better parent too.

]]>85% of sun damage happens before the age of 18. That means SPF and eye protection should be your top priority as a parent. Here's how to shop for sunglasses for your child.
]]>The summer sunshine is here! So it’s time to think about investing in sunglasses for your little ones. 85% of sun damage happens before the age of 18. That means SPF and eye protection should be your top priority as a parent.
Here are our tips for buying sunglasses for your little ones.
Help your youngster understand why they need to get sunglasses. Once they're old enough, explain why wearing sun protection for your eyes is important. When my husband and I explained this to our toddler, he refused to leave the house without sunglasses and insisted that everyone else do the same.
You'll want to try a few pairs on your kiddos face first. Look for a pair that doesn't slip off their nose or leave red marks. Children’s frames are designed to fit kids, so make sure you purchase well-made kids frames. They'll be constructed to be durable and withstand more bumps and tumbles than adult frames. Try to find sunglasses with spring hinges on the arms, so they can withstand some twisting and bending.
Get your kiddos involved in choosing their frames. When you encourage them to pick their own, they'll be more excited about wearing them. Also, give them a little lesson in taking care of them and they'll last much longer.
Children’s frames are no longer boring or bland. There are tons of choices of colour and design at many price points. You don't have to compromise function over style anymore.
How much your child enjoys wearing sunglass has as much to do with your attitude as theirs. Let them know that their sunglasses are for safety and also a fashion statement. Teach them to take pride in their new accessory.
Be sure to choose frames that will fit for the next six to 12 months. Sunglasses that are bigger than that will slip down your child's nose and block their vision. Also, take time to find the right pair. It's probably not a good idea to wait until you're already at the airport waiting for your flight to Florida.

Hot days are a challenge for a toddler who's constantly on the move. My son would probably prefer to run around naked all summer long. But let's face it! There are definitely a few places where that would not be appropriate.
The solution: linen looks for little ones.
Thanks to the Spring/Summer 2018 designers, the hot weather staple is exciting again. Linen was featured as a highlight in collections dedicated to the elevated minimalist style and a return to luxurious, raw, and eco-friendly materials. From Isabel Marant to Akris and Loewe, all reimagined the linen shirt in ivory, peach, or white. Of course, linen is also the definitive fabric of one of my favorite womenswear designers, Eileen Fisher. And Meghan Markle was even spotted recently looking chic in a white linen button-up tunic.

On hot days, it's the perfect material because it has natural temperature regulating properties. According to Vogue Magazine, that's the reason why it has been popular since Mesopotamian times: it's scientifically proven to be cooler than all other fabrics. It's also made of eco-friendly flax fibers. After a couple of washes, there's nothing softer against the skin and it's also super durable.
I'm so happy kids clothing designers are starting to use linen again too. From La Petite Collection to Louise Misha, linen is popping up in many kidswear designs this summer too, especially collections from France.

My favorite feature of linen is that it's eco-friendly. Linen is made from the natural organic fibers of the flax plant. The farming of flax requires few fertilizers or pesticides, and virtually all of the plant is used, causing little or no waste in production. Linen will also naturally decompose in the landfill, unlike synthetic fabrics like polyester.
A guilt-free fabric that's perfect for summer. What could be better than that?

Bedtime and storytime are special times to create memories children will treasure for years to come. Long into adulthood, we remember and cherish our favorite books from our childhood. The magic of story time and screen-free imaginative play is not lost and it's up to us as parents to encourage and nurture the imaginations of our children. Now that I'm a parent, I look forward to sharing my favorite childhood books with my son and watching his face light up as we turn each page.
Here at Poppys Collection, we believe the best books are the ones that stand the test of time. Much like the products we select for Poppys Collection, we love the timeless classics the best. We hope our list will inspire you to read with your little ones too.
For anyone who has read a Julia Donaldson book, you know how enjoyable they are to read out loud. The words rhyme and roll off of your tongue effortlessly. They are as enjoyable to read to your kids as they are to hear as a child. I love the way this book fires-up the imagination with the attention to detail and those perfect illustrations. Oh, and the Gruffalo himself has to be the best-loved monster there ever was! |
The classic Dr. Seuss storybook is a simple rhyming book for very young kids that's so catchy it will be stuck in your head for days. The bold, eye-catching colours will keep your little ones captivated. This book is also a sly way to help your kids learn to count without them even realizing. |
This classic is super cute. After becoming a parent myself, the narrative has taken on a much deeper meaning for me. It's a timeless story that all parents will happily read over and over. Your little ones will also enjoy doing the actions along with you. Plus it's a heartwarming story that will leave you both feeling warm and snuggly and ready for sleepytime. |
Millicent is a little girl who has only the wind as a playmate. Other kids tease her for having no friends, but on one special day, the wind blows a friend her way. We love how this book celebrates one girl's imagination and captivates your imagination with beautiful sweeping illustrations. |
This storybook is destined to become a classic. A bus driver has to leave so he asks the reader to make sure the pigeon doesn't drive the bus. The pigeon tries every method of persuasion to convince the reader to let it drive the bus. This story is so engaging, it will have everyone reading along. |

It’s finally nice weather and you're itching to get outside, soak up some sunshine, and make the most of our short Canadian summer. Here are our favorite summer activities for the whole family.

It’s finally nice weather and you're itching to get outside, soak up some sunshine, and make the most of our short Canadian summer. If you're anything like me, you want to maximize your time outside while keeping the kiddos busy (and hopefully worn out enough for an extra long nap).
Here are my favorite summer activities for the whole family.
This is the perfect place for the whole family to enjoy. Centre Island’s Centreville Amusement Park has rides galore, with everything from the classic teacups and vintage car rides, to bumper cars and bumper boats. You’ll easily keep the littles entertained all day! There are plenty of food options to make sure you're well fed too. Get the ferry over to the islands or a water taxi from Spadina or York Street.
Little tip: If you take a water taxi to the island, not only will you save time lining up for the ferry in the morning but you can get the ferry back for free in the afternoon!
If amusement parks aren't your thing, don’t worry. Take the ferry to Wards Island instead and enjoy breakfast, brunch or lunch at Wards Island Cafe. Better still, order takeaway picnics for the family to enjoy in a spot of your choice.
If that's not enough to keep you busy, you can rent everything from a bike to a boat, canoe, kayak and even a paddle board from the boathouse. You might even be lucky enough to see herons, nesting swans, and turtles as you paddle!
WHEN: All summer long
Turn up any time! No need to make renovations. The Evergreen Brickworks Scavenger Hunt is an activity you can do any time with your kids. It's free and donations are welcomed. You can enjoy learning about the history of the Don Valley and exploring the former quarry where bricks were made for many of Toronto’s famous landmarks, such as Casa Loma. There are often food trucks parked on site and you can also check Cafe Belong, not to mention the farmers market.

Hang out with nature and your family at the Toronto Zoo. It's fun, educational, and perfect for families with kids of different ages. Pick up an “Explorers Booklet” and fill out the activities for the chance to win a free souvenir. This year, there are lots of baby animals to have a look at, including a polar bear cub and lion cubs. How cute is that?

Get yourself a little taste of life at Riverdale's working farm in Toronto's Cabbagetown neighborhood. Riverdale Farm allows you to get an up close and personal look at pigs, chicken, cows, goats, and sheep. The grounds span 7.5 acres that are connected to the city ravine system, with wooded areas, ponds and plenty of nature for your littles to run wild in. Who said you had to travel out of town to visit a real farm?

Take me out to the ballgame and take the kids along too. Junior Jays Sundays are held at every home game played on a Sunday in Toronto. Kids can participate in fun games and activities on the 100, 200 and 500 levels, so parents can relax and enjoy the game. Little fans (aged 14 and under who are accompanied by a parent) can run the bases like the pros after the game.
Your Jr. Jay may also be randomly selected to participate in activities, like being the Jr. Jays Announcer for the bottom half of an inning. Lucky fans can also win prizes, be seen on the jumbo screen, and meet the Jays mascot.

Looking for a trip to create lifelong memories with your family? A European vacation is the answer. The food, the culture, the fashion, the museums, and the architecture are unparalleled on this side of the ocean. These are our top 5 favorite European vacation destinations.

As a transplanted Brit living in Toronto, I spend my winters dreaming of my favorite European vacation spots. Sure Florida or the Caribbean are wonderful destinations, but if you're looking for a trip to create lifelong memories with your family, a European vacation is something truly special. The food, the culture, the fashion, the museums, and the architecture are unparalleled on this side of the ocean.
Excited to plan your own European holiday? These are my top 5 favorite European vacation destinations.
This is one of the best Spanish islands and a favorite family holiday spot for the Spanish royal family. It's an island with picturesque beaches and coves, gorgeous mountainous scenery, and plenty of culture to soak up along with the sun. Mallorca was voted the second best island in all of Europe. It even has a hopping club scene! If you get bored (unlikely!), it's easy to hire a boat or jump on a ferry to explore neighboring islands.
Greece is the perfect destination for honeymooners and families alike. The scenery and panoramic vistas are second to none. The food is to die for: the olives, the fresh seafood, gyros, roasted lamb and potatoes, and oh the wine! I could keep going on and on, but I'm getting hungry. Greece's beautiful ancient ruins and the authentic cuisine will keep you captivated and coming back year after year.
With short, cheap flights to many cities, mainland Spain is one of the best spots to visit. Whether you're looking for a scenic mountain hike, an urban adventure in Barcelona or Madrid, or a summer sun getaway in the Costa del Sol, there is something for everyone. Plus, it's one of the best places in Europe to take in the sites by bike.
The famous home of the world's best pizza and pasta. I've never tasted a pizza like the one I had in Naples, nor a tomato for that matter. Food is a religion in Italy. Speaking of religion, a trip to the Vatican will surely impress. The scale, history, and grandeur of the art and architecture in Rome are truly unforgettable. Transport yourself back to the Roman empire with a visit to the Coliseum, the Pantheon or Palatine Hill. Breathtaking!
If you enjoy picturesque little villages, beautiful beaches, and amazing food, then the south of France is for you. Head to glitzy St-Tropez, popular among celebrities, for amazing for beach clubs and people watching. The historic Cannes, best known for its film festival and nightlife, really comes to life after dark. If a road trip is more your speed, head to Provence for rolling fields of lavender and an afternoon hike to visit a Unesco World Heritage site near Avignon, the Roman aqueduct called Pont du Gard.

With cottage season underway, it's an exciting time to get away from the city. Visiting a cottage is the perfect summer vacation option for parents with small kids or babies. But packing for your cottage getaway can be a real challenge. This is our must-have cottage packing list.

With cottage season underway, it's an exciting time to get away from the city. Visiting a cottage is the perfect summer vacation option for parents with small kids or babies.
Packing for your cottage getaway can be a real challenge. It's particularly difficult when you're not sure exactly what is available at your rental unit or what you left at your own cottage from last season. Here are some must-haves from my own cottage packing list.
Even if your cottage isn't on the equator, we all know how important it is to keep our littles protect from the harmful rays of the sun. The bold Globetrotter Sun Hat by Little Hotdog Watson features UPF50+, a fashion-forward leopard print pattern, and a cute bow in the back. It's also coated with a clever built-in mosquito repellant.
The Goldilocks fabric keeps your child's head the perfect temperature. The handy Velcro fastened chin strap on sizes up to age 3 keeping even the wriggliest kiddo protected. And it's completely machine washable. Bonus!
There's nothing better than spending a day at the beach, digging sand castles and playing in the water. Unfortunately, most beach toys these days don't last. Their bucket handle will break as they fill it with water and their shovel will snap as they dig a moat. The designers at the Belgian toy company Quut think that's ridiculous! So they'll build toys that are unbelievably fun and they last... season after season. Let's face it, if your kids are happy, everyone is happy!
I don't know how many time I've forgotten to pack my kid's pajamas. Be sure you don't make the same mistake! Make it easier to remember by investing in special cottage pajamas, perfect for any bedtime adventure. These sets are so cute you won’t mind if they're still wearing them the next day!
Whatever you take to the cottage this season, I hope you have a great time with your whole family. If you happen to be in Muskoka, be sure to check out our summer-long Container Boutique at Summer Water Sports in Minett. If you do forget anything important, we’ll have everything you need.Twitter: @wethemamas Instagram: @wethemamas Facebook: @wethemamas Francesca Brunsden is a transplanted Brit, a hairstylist-turned-entrepreneur, a queen crafter, and one social mama.
