How to Create a Capsule Wardrobe for Kids

What is a kids capsule wardrobe?

By Francesca Brunsden, Social Media Manager and Mom

We have said it before but we will say it again! We believe in quality over quantity. For us, that means buying fewer but better quality clothes for our kiddos. We're moms and trust me, we know all too well what it's like to do laundry for a growing family. If you're anything like us, you don’t have the time, the space, or the money for all those clothes.

Plus, approximately 85 percent of our clothing ends up in a landfill anyway. Seriously. That's a lot. It's over 10.5 million tons of clothing. According to Craig and Marc Kielburger, Canada produces enough fabric waste every year to fill the Rogers Centre baseball stadium three times over.

Simply put, a capsule wardrobe is a minimal wardrobe made up of versatile pieces. In this case, pieces that are made to last so you can pass them on from sibling to sibling. It's a collection of essential and timeless items that can be worn for years to come. That's exactly what Poppys Collection is all about!

What are the benefits of a capsule wardrobe?

Less storage space

With fewer items of clothing, you can maximize space and minimize storage. And let's face it, no matter where you're living these days, the square footage comes at a premium. Why not live without the crammed closets?

Less laundry

Okay, so you still have to wash the clothes every week. It’s not going to eliminate laundry (although I wish it would), but it'll feel more manageable with fewer loads and smaller mounds of dirty clothes lying around. Besides, with a ton of clothing strewn everywhere, not fitting into drawers and closets, you're bound to rewash that perfectly clean onesie... or seven. Come on, admit it! I know you’ve done this before, just to avoid sorting and putting them away.

Easier to shop for clothes

This one is simple. You already know what clothes you have and what you need. You know your pieces are high quality and timeless. They won't go out of style before they can be passed down. And all of the items go together to form complete outfits that match, no matter the occasion. How much easier could it be?

It will save you money

Does any baby really need 20 onesies? Probably not. Your littles will more than likely grow out of them before they even get worn. Yes, buying quality pieces may be a bit more expensive in the short term, but they are made to last. Think of them as an investment. Does buying 20 onesies for $5 each actually save you money in the long run? And ask yourself, what effect does that choice have on the world we leave behind for our children?

How's that for simple? Less money. Less laundry. Better quality clothing. More value. In other words, the benefits are endless. Trust us, you will feel less overwhelmed in general and let's face it: we could all do with a little less to think about when we're looking after little humans.
