Link of the Week Series: “Our Mothers As We Never Saw Them" by Edan Lepucki

We thought it would be fun to “give credit where credit is due” by featuring an article each week that has grabbed our attention. Since Mother's Day is just around the corner, this week we were inspired to share an article from the New York Times called, "Our Mothers As We Never Saw Them".

I am personally guilty of doing this – forgetting that my mom had a whole other life before me. As the youngest of four kids, my Mother had been in full Mom mode for over a decade by the time I came onto the scene. I like to say that my parents, “saved the best for last”, but I have a feeling that my siblings would disagree. When I see photos of my Mother, growing up in Newfoundland before she moved to Ontario to be with my Dad, I am shocked by how different she looks. My mom has the same smile, eyes, and bob hairstyle, but she looks so young and carefree.

My Mom was born to be a Mom. She always goes above and beyond for every family event, and she often sacrifices her own wants and needs in favor of everyone else’s. I think my siblings would agree that our Mother is the happiest when family surrounds her.

If I had to pick one, the quality that I admire most about my mother is her empathy. It's something that I strive to have as well. My Mom will always look at a situation and wonder how the other person might feel, and she always considers what they might be going through. Empathy… it’s a quality that I think we all should strive to have more of, because a little empathy can go a long way.

We were so drawn to Edan Lepucki's project. We would love it if you would share a photo of your Mom, before she became a Mom, and tell us about a quality she has that you admire.
